Northern burger

In northern Alberta we don’t see a lot of warm weather. So what do we do when we see plus temperatures? we bbq. This hamburger was inspired by myself and my husband. Made with Alberta beef and topped off with apple sauerkraut it is sure to be a crowed pleaser.  Serve with some hot potato wedges and a cold local beer.


For hamburger

  • 3 pounds Alberta beef
  • 1 tea spoon turmeric
  •  1 table spoon Italian dried herbs
  • half red onion
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups large flack oats
  • 3 minced garlic cloves
  • locally bought bbq sauce or you can make your own
  • Apple sauerkraut
  • large white onion
  • 5 mushrooms
  •  12 homemade 12 grain buns
  •  12 slices mozzarella cheese

For potato wedges

  • 6 red potatoes
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 1 table spoon sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon dry Italian herbs


For hamburgers

Heat a skillet on stove top with olive oil. Add onions and mushrooms cook till caramelized. Remove from heat and place aside. Place hamburger meet in large bowl with egg, oatmeal, turmeric, Italian dry herbs, red onion and garlic. Mix but do not over mix the meat. Cook hamburger’s. Can stove top or bbq. I prefer bbq.  Coat with your favorite bbq sauce while cooking.While cooking place pieces of cheese on each burger. mmm..melted cheese. Remove from heat and place on buns with your favorite condiments. I love  Dijon mustard. Place your caramelized onions and mushrooms on hamburgers. Last but not least the apple sauerkraut. I made my own. You can buy sauerkraut as well if you prefer.

pre-heat over to 375.  Cut your potatoes into  wedge slices. Add one cup of olive oil to a large bowl and Italian herbs. Add potatoes to bowl and coat well with oil and Italian herbs. Place in oven for 1 hour or till lightly brown. Flip every 20 min. Serve with a favorite dipping sauce.

We enjoyed this meal with a nice cold local beer from Edmonton Alberta.
